New UNM course explains how beer changed the world

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Beer breweries and tap rooms continue to bubble up in New Mexico, quenching the desert state's thirst for more creative and quality brews.


Maria Lane, an associate professor and department chair in geography and environmental studies, said it's also opening a door for academic study.

"Albuquerque is the perfect place to study beer," she said. "I mean it's nationally recognized."

A new course titled "World of Beer" will launch this fall. Lane said part of the focus is how beer, physically and economically, changes the world right down to the street level. Local brewers will help out as guest speakers.

"Thinking about beer as a business, about beer as a player in our urban landscape," Lane said.

The change can be drastic, even for non-drinkers, especially when it comes to urban neighborhoods, Lane said.

"How to help downtown become the downtown we all want it to be. Now I'm not saying we need a taproom on every corner but taprooms are certainly playing a part in that urban downtown transition," she said.

Lane hopes the course can feed into the local scene.

"Some of them, yes, might go into the brewing industry ... some of them might decide to explore more of the chemistry of this and they'll go take a chemistry class," said Lane.

Samples won't be given in class, but field trips to breweries will be available for legal age students. Because this is considered an entry-level class, anyone enrolled at UNM can take it.
