DURANGO, Colo. – It's not time quite yet, but soon enough skiers will be able to hit the snowy slopes around northern New Mexico, including the Four Corners region.

"We're always trying to attract new people to the sport. Because it is such great way to enjoy the winter here," said Kim Oyler, a representative for Durango Mountain Resort.

The resort is looking to do just that with a handful of new trails for skiers to brave this season.

"We will have new trails – both expert terrain (and) intermediate terrain. We are putting in a new magic carpet for beginners in the Columbine beginner area,” Oyler said. “We are also constructing a new mountain coaster, so that will be opening soon. We have a lot of great improvements going on at the mountain this year."

But those aren't the only new features coming down the pipe. The resort also is looking to start building a new chair lift next summer.

The plan is for the new lift to be constructed about a quarter mile away from the main parking lot. The terrain there is a little bit more rough, and the slopes adorning that side of the mountain are for those with more experience skiing here.

"It is going to be a great new lift for people. You can park right at the Gelande parking lot and you can take the lift up. It is top-to-bottom skiing, or you can even go over to the rest of the mountain and ski that terrain as well," Oyler said. "Which will spread people out. You don't have to go to the main base area."
